Ukraine celebrates the Crimean Tatar Flag Day
26 June 2017 12:40

Today, on June, 26 Ukraine together with Crimean Tatars celebrate the Crimean Tatar Flag Day.

The Crimean Tatar flag was first flown in 1918 after the Crimean Tatar national convent (Qurultai) that took place in in the town of Bakhchisarai had officially adopted it in 1917. On June 26, 1992, during the second Qurultai of Crimean Tatar people that took place in the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea – Simferopol – it was decided that this day officially became the Flag Day. The decision was restored after the adoption of Ukraine’s independence.

Crimean Tatar flag is a flag of blue with a yellow emblem (Tarak-Tamga) in the upper left corner. Tarak-Tamga is the generic sign Hera, the ruling dynasty of the Crimean khanate.

With the beginning of the illegal occupation and attempted annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and the consequent intensification of repression against the indigenous population of the Peninsula, the main events of the Day of Crimean Tatar flag occur on the mainland of Ukraine (specifically in Kyiv) with the support and coordination by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and of human rights advocacy organizations.
