Joint Communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Bahrain was signed and came into effect on July 20, 1992.
In the year 2002 first practical steps have been made to initiate political dialogue between the Parties. On 1 March 2002 the President of Ukraine H.E. Leonid Kuchma congratulated the King of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa with the remarkable historic event in the life of Bahrain – proclaiming it as the Kingdom and transformation of the state to the constitutional monarchy. The Head of the Verkhovna Rada (the Parliament) of Ukraine also send his congratulations.
On June 26, 2002 Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine send a letter to his Bahraini counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa. The letter was devoted to the preparations of the President of Ukraine visit to Bahrain. Possibilities of signing of bilateral economic agreements were also considered in the letter.
First official visit of the President of Ukraine H.E. Leonid Kuchma to Bahrain on January 21, 2003 became the main event of Ukrainian-Bahraini relations. The President of Ukraine had meetings with the King of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa, Crown Prince of Bahrain, Supreme Commander of Bahraini Armed Forces Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Speaker of Shura Council (Upper Chamber of the Parliament of Bahrain) Faisal Al Musawi.
The parties agreed on the strengthening of political dialogue, about forming of the legal base and also concerning development of Ukrainian-Bahraini cooperation in the spheres of industry and agriculture, banking, investment and tourism spheres.
In 2008, relations between Ukraine and Bahrain have gained considerable momentum. On January 29, 2008 in Manama first Ukrainian-Bahraini political consultations were held. As a result of the political consultations Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Bahrain was signed.
On February 28, 2012 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United Arab Emirates Yuriy Polurez presented his credentials to His Majesty King of the Kingdom of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa. After the official welcoming ceremony they held separate talks. Bahraini leader congratulated Ukrainian diplomat on his high appointment and emphasized the readiness to develop cooperation with Ukraine in all areas without exception. During the meeting there was discussion of establishing a regular political dialogue as a key to further fruitful cooperation between the countries.
The day before, on February 27, 2012, the Ambassador of Ukraine presented a copy of credentials to H.E. the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. During the meeting the Minister congratulated Ukrainian diplomat on the appointment noting that Bahrain is interested in developing bilateral relations with Ukraine because of its place in the world community and strategic location.
On July 12, 2021 First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova held an online meeting with the Undersecretary for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. The parties discussed intensifying of political dialogue, mechanisms for deepening economic cooperation, development of the legal base, as well as cooperation within international organizations.
On November 21, 2022 Ambassador of Ukraine to the UAE Dmytro Senik had a meeting with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain for Political Affairs Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. Dmytro Senik thanked the Kingdom of Bahrain for its support of the UN General Assembly resolution "Territorial integrity of Ukraine: defending the principles of the Charter of the United Nations". Ways to intensify the dialogue and cooperation in the field of food security were also discussed.
On March 14, 2023 First deputy speaker of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniyenko met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani on the occasion of the delegation's visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain to participate in the meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly. The meeting reviewed the bilateral relations between Ukraine and Bahrain in various fields, especially parliamentary cooperation.
On May 5, 2023 President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, who was on the first visit to our country since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The Head of State noted that the visit of Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs to Ukraine was an important signal of cooperation and support between our countries. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine strives for peace, and that is why he offered the international community the Ukrainian Peace Formula. "And we will be grateful to all the states that really want to help Ukraine achieve peace," the President noted.
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba also held meetings and fruitful negotiations with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
On January 8, 2024 President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had the first in the history of bilateral relations phone call with His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The President of Ukraine and the King of Bahrain discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, global food security and support for the Ukrainian Peace Formula.
